Inexpensive ways to make your rental home stand out

Most people interested in moving into a rental home wait until the weather warms up to do so. Spring is when renters start looking at their options. Now is the time to make your home stand out in a positive light. There is no need to break the bank in order to get a tenant in the house. There are plenty of cost effective methods that will help clean up your house, and make it more appealing.

It’s important to start with the exterior. The outside of your home is the first thing potential renters are going to see. If your home looks run down from the outside, there is a good chance the renter may make their decision just based on that.

Instead of fixing up the whole exterior of the house, paint the front door. It’s generally where the eyes are drawn first, and a fresh coat of paint, especially if it complements the rest of the home, can really tie the whole look together.

Keep your landscaping fresh. This does not mean you need to run out and build an entire garden. However, make sure that your grass is freshly cut, and that your yard is free of leaves or litter.

An inexpensive way to go the extra mile would be to add window boxes. Instead of building said garden, put on window boxes and plant flowers in those. It is completely low maintenance, and a great way to add a homey feel. Here are step-by-step instructions for adding window boxes.

As far as the inside of the home goes, the most important element is doing some spring cleaning!  You want to do a full cleaning of every room in the house. The cheapest way to do this is by doing it yourself, or with friends and family. Scrub down the bathroom and kitchen, make sure the carpets are vacuumed, and all mirrors and windows are sparkling. There is nothing more unappealing to most potential tenants than a home that is not ready to live in.

It is a must to have working appliances. If the toilet doesn’t work, or you have a leaky faucet, it is best to fix it before it becomes a bigger problem.

If you haven’t done so in a while, it may be a good idea to give the walls a fresh coat of paint. It may be relatively inexpensive compared to what you will get out of it. It is suggested to do neutral colored walls, such as beige or gray all throughout the house. Anything too bright or too dark may turn people away.

If you want to add more fun and inexpensive DIY projects to your home, Pinterest is a good website to check out. You will find endless ideas to help get the creative juices flowing.

Good luck this spring season!
